Hypochlorous acid, with the chemical symbol HOCl, is the form of chlorine that has the highest bactericidal activity against a broad range of microorganisms. It’s the killing chemistry of chlorine. It’s even been cleared by the FDA as a high-level disinfectant (FDA, personal communication, September 18, 2002. Center for Disease Control). Yet, with a near neutral pH, it is very friendly to animals, humans and the environment.
